Injured fireman released
By BRAD RHEN Staff Writer Lebanon Daily News
The Lebanon firefighter who was injured while helping a woman out of a burning apartment building last week was released from the hospital today.
Mike Daub, a paid city firefighter since 2000, was released from the Hyman Caplan Pavilion, where he had been transferred Monday afternoon.
Daub was injured while helping 21-year-old Maritsa Montialla down a ladder from her third-floor apartment at 35 S. Ninth St. on July 14. As they passed a second-floor window, flames and heat caused Montialla to let go of the ladder, and she and Daub fell about 15 feet to the pavement below.
Montialla suffered third-degree burns to about 20 percent of her body and a fractured skull and vertabrae. She was flown to the Lehigh Valley Hospital Burn Center where she remains in critical condition, a spokeswoman said yesterday.
Daub suffered a broken vertabrae, a broken tailbone and two breaks to his pelvis as well as a ruptured bladder. His injuries did not require surgery, although it was an option.
Daub, who lives in Jackson Township with his wife, Heather, and two sons, Ryan, 5, and Colin, 3, will be off work for at least the rest of this year.
He said he doesn't have any major plans except to "get better."
"That's about it," he said. "I'll just take it day by day."
While at Hyman Caplan, Daub was undergoing physical therapy twice a day. He will continue physical therapy as an outpatient, likely once a day.
During his stay in the hospital, Daub said he got a dozens of cards and several flowers. Another stack of cards arrived yesterday, he said.
Many of the cards were from friends and family members, but some were from people he didn't know, including several churches and fire departments.
A woman from Montialla's family called the day after the fire thanking him, and the family sent him a card earlier this week, he said.
Daub said his fellow firefighters are being very supportive.
"They're all asking what they can do to help," he said.
He said he wants to thank everyone who thought about him and prayed for him.
"I definitely think it's helping me out with my recuperation," he said. |
